Job Title: Principal Transport Planner – Development Planning
Reports to: Associate Director / Director
About the Role
We are seeking an experienced and commercially aware Principal Transport Planner to join our Development Planning team. This role will lead the delivery of transport planning services across a diverse portfolio of development projects, including residential, commercial, mixed-use, and infrastructure schemes. You will play a key role in shaping sustainable transport strategies, managing client relationships, and mentoring junior staff.
Key Responsibilities

Lead the preparation and delivery of Transport Assessments, Transport Statements, Travel Plans, and related technical documents.

Provide strategic transport advice to support planning applications and site promotions.

Manage project teams, budgets, and timelines to ensure high-quality and timely delivery.

Act as the primary point of contact for clients, local authorities, and key stakeholders.

Represent clients at meetings, public consultations, and planning committees.

Undertake junction capacity assessments and transport modelling using industry-standard software (e.g., Junctions, LinSig, VISSIM).

Develop access strategies, parking layouts, and sustainable transport solutions.

Review and interpret transport data, policy, and guidance to inform project strategies.

Support business development activities, including bid writing and networking.

Mentor and support the professional development of junior team members.
Requirements

Degree in Transport Planning, Civil Engineering, Geography, or a related field.

Chartered or working towards Chartership (e.g., CIHT, TPS, ICE or equivalent).

Extensive experience in development planning transport consultancy.

Strong knowledge of UK planning policy, design standards, and transport guidance.

Proven project management and client-facing experience.

Proficiency in transport modelling and analysis tools.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines effectively.
Desirable Skills

Experience with Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA).

Knowledge of active travel and sustainable transport strategies.

Experience in public inquiry or expert witness roles.

Commercial awareness and ability to identify new business opportunities.
