Principal Planning Policy Officer

Location: Hybrid (1 day per week / fortnight in the office)
Rate: Up to £60 per hour
Contract: 12 Months
IR35 Status: Inside IR35
Start: ASAP

A Local Authority is seeking an experienced Principal Planning Policy Officer to join their Planning Policy team on a 12-month contract.

This is an opportunity to take a leading role in progressing key Local Plan and strategic planning policy workstreams, helping shape the authority’s long-term growth strategy and spatial planning framework.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead on complex planning policy projects supporting the preparation, review, and implementation of the Local Plan and related planning policy documents.

  • Review and interpret evidence base studies, data, and consultation responses to inform policy development.

  • Draft planning policies, supporting text, and evidence-based reports.

  • Provide expert planning policy advice to senior officers, members, and internal teams.

  • Work collaboratively with Development Management, infrastructure teams, and external stakeholders.

  • Assist with consultations, policy examinations, and stakeholder engagement processes.

  • Support the monitoring and review of planning policies and strategic planning initiatives.

Principal Planning Policy Officers typically lead complex policy workstreams, interpret planning evidence, and help deliver local plan preparation and monitoring within local planning authorities
