Interim Major Projects Lead / Manager

My client is seeking an experienced Interim Major Projects Lead / Manager to support a significant and growing pipeline of large‑scale, high‑profile development proposals within a local authority in the Home Counties.
This is a senior interim appointment operating at Development Manager to Head of Planning level, suited to a confident, politically astute planner who can combine strategic leadership with hands‑on delivery in a fast‑paced and high‑profile environment.
The Role
The successful candidate will take a lead role in managing and progressing a portfolio of key major projects, some of which attract substantial public interest and political scrutiny.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Acting as lead officer on key major and complex planning applications
- Providing clear, robust advice to senior officers and elected Members
- Operating confidently within a politically charged environment
- Taking responsibility for building and shaping a Major Projects team
- Ensuring major projects align with the council’s wider corporate and place‑based objectives
The Ideal Candidate
This role will suit an experienced interim with a broad Development Management skillset, capable of hitting the ground running and working independently from day one.
Candidates are likely to have:
- Proven experience at Head of Planning / DMM / Senior Major Projects level
- A strong track record of handling large, complex and contentious applications
- High levels of political awareness and stakeholder management experience
- Confidence working directly with Councillors, the Leader of the Council and senior corporate officers
- Experience leading small teams
Working Arrangements / Terms
- 6 month initial contract
- 3–5 days per week, flexible depending on candidate availability
- Hybrid working, typically around 2 days per week in the office
- £550-£650/d
