Senior Planning Officer – Major Projects

£40,708 - £45,122 (including Market Supplement of £4,345)

Full time – 37 hours per week

Rugby Borough Council is dedicated to both community and colleague growth. With a focus on wellbeing and personal development, we offer a range of career opportunities where you can take pride in the positive changes you help create. Join an organisation committed to the success of one of the Country’s fastest-growing boroughs and the people who make it thrive.

About the role

Rugby is one of the fastest growing towns in the country and is set to grow by 30% by 2035.  Located in the county of Warwickshire, near the cities of Coventry and Leicester, with direct rail links to London and Birmingham and within “the golden triangle” of the strategic road network, Rugby’s accessibility is one of the key attributes making it a great place to live and work.

This is an exciting opportunity for an exceptional and dynamic planner who wants to take on high-profile work and make a visible difference. You’ll be supported to grow your skills and career, with a healthy challenge from a varied caseload of major, complex and sometimes contentious applications that will shape Rugby’s housing delivery, economic growth and town centre regeneration.

The Major Projects and Regeneration Team is dedicated to driving forward and securing delivery of the Borough’s most strategic developments. You’ll work on a portfolio that includes our two allocated sustainable urban extensions, Houlton and South West Rugby, as well as landmark schemes such as Prospero Anstey and the recently approved Frasers Group Global Headquarters. More information can be found on our major projects on our website.

In this role you will lead on planning applications for our strategically important sites (including Houlton and South-West Rugby) through the use of planning performance agreements. You will deliver high-quality pre-application advice and coordinate input from internal teams and external stakeholders to keep complex projects moving. You will also support and guide planning officers within the wider team, negotiate with applicants and agents to achieve high quality outcomes, and prepare appeals and provide expert evidence at Hearings and Public Inquiries where required.

The Council also has ambitious plans to revitalise and regenerate the town centre. You will have the opportunity to support and help shape a wide range of planning applications coming forward through town centre regeneration proposals.

About you

You will need to have a relevant degree, professional qualification or appropriate experience, a sound knowledge of current planning legislation, relevant experience in development management as well as possess excellent communication and advisory skills.

A driving licence and access to a car for business use is essential.

Benefits

  • 35 days leave (including 8 Bank Holidays and 3 extra days normally applied at Christmas)
  • Generous Local Government Pension Scheme
  • Hybrid working up to 60%
  • Flexi time scheme
  • Annual leave purchase scheme
  • Subsidised parking
  • Structured Induction Program
  • Learning and Development opportunities including Future Leaders programmes
  • Payment of a professional subscription for approved professionals
