Job Title: Associate Director – Transport (Development Planning)

Location: London
Reporting to: Director / Partner
Salary: £80k – £90k
Type: Full-time, Permanent


Overview

We are seeking an experienced and commercially aware Associate Director to lead and grow our Transport (Development Planning) offering. This role combines technical leadership, project delivery, client relationship management, and team development, with a strong focus on supporting development-led projects across a range of sectors.


Key Responsibilities

Project Leadership & Delivery

  • Lead the delivery of transport planning inputs for development projects, including Transport Assessments, Travel Plans, and Environmental Statement chapters.
  • Provide strategic transport advice to clients throughout the development lifecycle.
  • Oversee project programmes, budgets, and resourcing to ensure high-quality and timely delivery.
  • Act as Project Director on major or complex schemes.

Business Development & Client Management

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, local authorities, and key stakeholders.
  • Identify new business opportunities and lead or support bid submissions and tenders.
  • Contribute to the growth strategy of the development planning team and wider business.

Team Leadership & Mentorship

  • Manage, mentor, and develop junior and mid-level staff.
  • Support recruitment and team growth initiatives.
  • Promote a collaborative, high-performing team culture.

Technical Excellence

  • Provide expert input on transport policy, planning, and design standards.
  • Review and sign off on technical reports and deliverables.
  • Stay informed on industry trends, legislation, and best practices.

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Represent clients in meetings with local authorities, public consultations, and hearings.
  • Provide expert witness support where required.

Requirements

Essential:

  • Degree in Transport Planning, Civil Engineering, Geography, or related field.
  • Significant experience in transport planning, particularly within development planning.
  • Strong understanding of UK planning policy and transport assessment frameworks.
  • Proven experience managing complex projects and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Excellent communication and client-facing skills.

Desirable:

  • Chartered status (e.g., CILT, CIHT, TPS, ICE) or working towards it.
  • Experience acting as an expert witness.
  • Established client network and track record of winning work.
