Design Manager – Private Planning & Design Consultancy – Exeter

Fraser Recruitment is delighted to partner with a respected, multi-disciplinary planning and design group seeking a Design Manager to lead its design function.

This is a key leadership role responsible for driving design quality, technical compliance, and team development across a large, multi-sector portfolio. You will play a central role in shaping standards, supporting delivery, and contributing to the continued growth of the business.

The Role

As Design Manager, you will lead the design team and ensure high standards are maintained across all projects.

You will oversee design delivery from early feasibility through to construction, ensuring outputs respond to:

✔ Technical and regulatory requirements (Building Regulations, CDM, Building Safety Act)
✔ Site constraints and buildability considerations
✔ Client objectives and commercial viability

You will work collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary environment, supporting both project delivery and internal capability.

Key Responsibilities

✅ Lead and support the design team, promoting best practice and continuous improvement
✅ Oversee CPD, mentoring, and professional development (RIBA, CIAT, CIOB)
✅ Ensure compliance with Building Regulations, CDM, and relevant legislation
✅ Manage design quality control systems and technical review processes
✅ Analyse planning/design refusals and implement improvements to processes and outputs
✅ Manage shared technical resources, standard details, and design systems
✅ Review and enhance software, tools, and operational efficiency
✅ Act as a key internal lead for CDM and building regulations
✅ Support internal and external promotion of the design function
✅ Contribute to business growth, including client engagement and potential business development

About You

✔ Strong background in design and technical project delivery
✔ Proficient in AutoCAD (Revit or 3D capability advantageous)
✔ In-depth knowledge of Building Regulations, CDM, and construction methods
✔ Experience undertaking building surveys and working on-site
✔ Knowledge of building contracts and project delivery processes
✔ Strong communication skills with both internal teams and clients
✔ Ability to lead, mentor, and develop a team

Desirable:

✔ Relevant professional qualification (RIBA, CIAT, CIOB or similar)
✔ Understanding of the UK planning system
✔ Experience in rural or agricultural projects
✔ Portfolio of completed work
✔ Driving licence and access to a vehicle

Office Location

This role can be based in Exeter, with flexible working arrangements available.
