Job: Interim Principal Planning Officer
Duration: 3–6 months contract
Hybrid working: Ideally two-three days in the office, but will consider one day per week
Rate: £50-£60/h
IR35: Will consider each applicant individually
Timescales: Interview w/c 16th February, start ASAP
My client based on the South Coast is seeking one or two experienced Principal Development Management Officers to take the lead on a portfolio of major and often contentious planning applications. This is a high impact interim role supporting significant growth across the borough.
You will manage a varied and strategic caseload, which could include applications up to 2000 dwellings, and major commercial developments. The council is looking for confident, experienced officers who can operate with autonomy and provide a high standard of professional planning advice.
Key responsibilities
- Lead major and strategic planning applications from pre app through to determination
- Manage complex and contentious residential and commercial schemes
- Prepare clear and robust reports
- Present at planning committee when required
- Handle appeals and inquiries if they arise
- Potential for light line management depending on internal allocation

- Track record in major application handling within a local planning authority
- Ability to manage politically sensitive cases
- Skilled communicator with excellent report writing ability
- Able to start ASAP and commit to a 3–6 month assignment
