Rate: £60 per hour
Contract: Initial contract (extensions likely)

Job Purpose

An experienced Principal Planning Officer is required to lead on the determination of major planning applications for a local authority in the South West of England. The role will focus on progressing complex, large-scale developments through the Development Management process and providing expert planning advice to officers, members, applicants, and stakeholders.

This is an excellent opportunity for a senior planning professional who can hit the ground running in a fast-paced Development Management environment.


Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage a caseload of major and complex planning applications, including strategic residential and mixed-use developments

  • Provide expert advice on Development Management matters, ensuring decisions are robust, defensible, and policy-compliant

  • Prepare high-quality officer reports, recommendations, and conditions for committee and delegated decisions

  • Negotiate with developers, agents, consultees, and internal stakeholders to secure high-quality development outcomes

  • Represent the authority at planning committees, hearings, and meetings as required

  • Mentor and support junior planning officers where appropriate

  • Ensure applications are determined within statutory timescales and in line with national and local planning policy
