An opportunity has arisen for an experienced Senior Planning Officer to join a Development Management team within a Midlands local authority on a temporary basis. The post holder will play a key role in supporting the efficient determination of complex minor planning applications.

The successful candidate will be responsible for managing a varied caseload of complex minor and householder applications, assessing proposals against local and national planning policy, negotiating with applicants and agents, and producing high-quality reports under delegated powers and, where necessary, for Planning Committee consideration. The role will require effective collaboration with internal consultees, external stakeholders, and elected Members to ensure robust, timely and defensible planning decisions.

Applicants should have substantial experience working within a local authority Development Management environment and demonstrate a strong understanding of planning legislation, policy interpretation and decision-making processes. You will be able to work with minimal supervision, manage competing priorities, and maintain performance against statutory timescales. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential, along with the ability to provide clear professional advice to a wide range of stakeholders.

Membership of, or eligibility for membership of, the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) or an equivalent professional body is required. This role offers a competitive hourly rate of £40–£45 per hour and provides an excellent opportunity to contribute to a busy planning service within a supportive authority.
