Interim Strategic Sites Principal Planner
Location: South East (Hybrid – 1 day every 1–2 weeks on site)
Rate: £55–£60 per hour (via umbrella)
Contract: 6–12 months (initial 6 months with strong possibility of extension)

About the Role
A local authority in the South East (good links to London) is seeking an experienced Strategic Sites Principal Planner to lead on a portfolio of high‑profile, complex, and sensitive development sites. This is an important position within the Development Management team, and the council requires a candidate with a proven track record delivering major applications, PPA work, and strategic DM casework.
You will take responsibility for progressing a range of large‑scale and strategic development sites, including those subject to PPAs and several council-owned projects. This is a key role where your expertise will directly influence strategic growth and delivery across the district.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead on major and strategic planning applications, ensuring high-quality, robust, and timely decision-making.
- Manage large, complex development proposals, including mixed-use schemes, large residential sites, and regeneration projects.
- Oversee PPAs, ensuring milestones and quality expectations are met.
- Act as the primary planning advisor for council-owned development sites.
- Provide specialist planning advice to internal and external stakeholders, including senior officers, members, developers, and the public.
- Prepare and present reports to committee, offering clear professional recommendations.
- Support and mentor junior officers where required, promoting high standards within the DM team.
About You
The council is seeking someone who can confidently handle a complex workload while maintaining a proactive, solutions-focused approach.
You should bring:
- Extensive Development Management experience at Senior/Principal level.
- A strong background handling major applications and strategic sites.
- Proven experience working with PPAs and/or large-scale developers.
- Ability to hit the ground running and work with minimal supervision.
Contract & Working Arrangements
- 6 – 12 month contract, with the ability to extend depending on performance and project needs.
- Hybrid working: primarily remote, with one office visit every 1–2 weeks.
- Competitive hourly rate: £55–£60/h.
