Planning Officer, Local Authority (Essex)

Contract: Temporary, Full Time (Initial 3-month contract)
Rate: Up to £40.00 per hour (umbrella)
Location: Remote working supported

An Essex-based Local Authority is seeking a capable and detail-oriented Planning Officer to join their Development Management team on a 3-month interim basis. This role offers remote working, with site visits managed by the successful candidate, and a competitive rate of up to £40.00 per hour.

This is a great opportunity for someone looking to work with a well-organised planning service and manage a steady caseload of smaller-scale applications.

The Role

You will be responsible for managing a varied caseload, including householder applications and minor developments of up to 9 residential units. The role will involve handling applications from validation through to determination, engaging with applicants and consultees, and producing clear and timely delegated reports.

This position is ideal for a self-sufficient planner who can manage their own site visits and maintain regular communication with the team while working remotely.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assess and determine householder and minor planning applications (up to 9 units)

  • Carry out site visits, assessments, and prepare delegated reports

  • Engage with applicants, agents, consultees, and the public in a professional manner

  • Provide planning advice and updates to internal teams and stakeholders

  • Ensure decisions are in line with national and local planning policy

  • Support wider team performance and maintain consistent case turnaround

About You

  • Proven experience in Development Management, particularly with householder and minor applications

  • Comfortable working remotely and independently managing your own caseload and site visits

  • Strong understanding of UK planning legislation and policy frameworks

  • Excellent report writing, time management, and communication skills

  • Previous local authority experience preferred

  • RTPI membership or eligibility desirable

Why Apply?

  • Up to £40.00 per hour (umbrella)

  • 3-month contract, with potential to extend

  • Remote working supported, with flexible site visit management

  • Focused and manageable caseload in a well-organised team environment

  • Ideal for planners looking for autonomy and flexibility
