Location: West Midlands (Hybrid working available, 1/2 days on site the rest wfh)
Rate: £35-£45 an hour (Inside IR35)
Contract Length: 3–6 months (likely extension)
We’re seeking an experienced Conservation Officer to support a local authority on a contract basis. You’ll play a key role in protecting and enhancing the historic built environment, working with planning teams, councillors, and the public.
Key responsibilities:

Provide expert advice on planning applications affecting conservation areas, listed buildings, and heritage assets

Assist with conservation area appraisals, boundary reviews, and management plans

Support the repair and reuse of listed buildings at risk

Contribute to heritage policy development and funding bids

Promote good conservation practice with developers, stakeholders, and community groups
What we’re looking for:

Background in building conservation, heritage, or historic environment work

Experience advising on conservation areas and listed buildings

Relevant degree (Town Planning, Architecture, Building Surveying, or Heritage-related subject)

Ideally, previous local authority planning/conservation experience

Able to work independently and manage deadlines
