I'm working with a well-regarded Local Authority in West Sussex, who are looking for an experienced Principal Planning Officer to lead on major development applications. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to strategic growth in the region while working within a supportive team.

Key Details:

  • Contract: Up to 12 months
  • Rate: £45–£55/hour (Inside IR35)
  • Location: West Sussex – minimum one day per week in the office
  • Start: Immediate/ASAP
  • Committee: Monthly daytime Planning Committee attendance required

Role Overview:

You will be responsible for managing a caseload of major planning applications, including residential schemes of up to 300–400 units. The role involves direct engagement with developers, stakeholders, and elected members, and requires confident representation of the council at committee.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead on complex major applications from pre-app through to decision
  • Prepare and present reports to Planning Committee
  • Provide expert planning advice and guidance to internal and external stakeholders
  • Ensure compliance with planning legislation and local policy
  • Represent the council in negotiations and public forums

Candidate Profile:

  • Extensive experience in Development Management, particularly major applications
  • Strong understanding of UK planning legislation and procedures
  • Confident communicator with committee presentation experience
  • RTPI Chartered (or eligible) preferred
  • Able to work independently and collaboratively within a team
